Interstellar Game Jam 3#

The Interstellar Game Jam 3 was a 5-day game jam with the theme of ‘Defy The Laws’ which I took part in with AGingerHere.

This theme was not the easiest to create a solid idea without doing the typical go-to being to flip gravity as the primary theme. After some thinking, we came to the idea of escaping prison as our main concept to come in line with the theme.

Due to the time restrictions as well as my teammate being new to game development and Unity as a whole. Due to this, we decided to make a 2D game with pixel art visuals. This would mean we could create the assets within the levels much faster than creating 3D assets which my teammate has limited experience with.

Gameplay#

We wanted the player to escape the prison by using puzzle-like mechanics we decided to create a point-and-click adventure game.

AGingerHere designed the levels with inspiration from escape rooms.

Most of the levels were designed using a couple of mechanics which is ideal for the short amount of time we have to create the game.

Mechanics:

  • Wrench, this allows the player to pull open grates.
  • Keypads, enter code that can be found in the same room as the keypad to open a sewer or door.
  • Lockpick, only used this once unfortunately but allows for safes to be opened to find what they contain.
  • Lever, the player can pull the lever for a variety of actions to occur.

Conclusion#

The game overall was a success. It could have had quite a few quality-of-life improvements implemented before the submission time. For example, showing the player whether they have collected a wrench.
