Seeing Double#

This was my first complete game though it was unreleased due to some bugs that could make the game very easy or incredibly hard. The assets may look similar to my first released game ‘A Cats Climb Home’ as a lot of the assets and animations were reused from this game within ‘A Cats Climb Home’.

Seeing Double is a platformer where the player has to collect gems to recreate a cloud to go back to ‘Cloudlantis’ the player can acquire gems from finding them around the world and from defeating the various bosses around the world.

Success#

The world art has room for improvement but the emissive sprites against the generally dark world gave the game very unique visuals which I was very pleased with.

The player controls are very responsive and simple which is ideal for most games as it allows the player to get to grips with the game quickly.

Issues#

While the controls are good I could provide some hints or a tutorial for some of the interactions within the game so the player doesn’t feel lost at any point during gameplay. For example, the danglers which you would use white cat to trigger to open passages are not explained explicitly which could easily cause issues.

The other issue with the game is the bosses which are a key part of the gameplay within the game. While not all the bosses had serious problems a lot of them did from uninspired gameplay or buggy mechanics which could destroy a player’s experience. The worst offender of bugged mechanics was the beholder in the ‘Tangled Depths’ which had issues with the animations and laser mechanics.

Due to there being 5 different bosses with a large amount of redundant code which would need to be solved before then bug fixing some of the bosses would require a large rewrite to fix.

Ultimately I chose to rather aim my efforts elsewhere rather than attempting to fix the numerous issues that exist and would come with rewriting all the bosses.
